The mission of this project is using a cutting edge technology to help the local business. Therefore, I designed an alert app that using IoT technology for the community fridge.

It uses app and sensors to improve the overall efficiency for volunteers’ works.

Background

What is a community fridge?

  • A community fridge can be a 24/7 anonymous food resource.

  • Started by New Yorkers of all kinds—from everyday people to small businesses or mutual aid networks.

  • People could grab what they need with no questions asked.

In Our Hearts NYC

  • One of the largest community fridge networks in the US, describe themselves as mutual aid groups.

  • Made up of organizers and volunteers who respond to the needs of communities.

  • Help to manage more than 100 community fridges in New York City.

Current Situation

There are now more than 100 of community fridges in the NYC, up from about 15 before the pandemic.

Most of community fridges are 100% run by volunteers.

Volunteers are very needed at this time since the rapidly growth of community fridge.

Objective

Designing an alert app using IoT technology for volunteers who work for community fridges in NYC.

  • Using sensors, installed into community fridges, to collect data that is then analyzed and presented through the app.

  • Through the app, it can measures and predicts the fullness level, dirtiness level of the fridges and if they need temperature adjustments or maintenance.

  • If the fridges are low on food, need to clean, need temperature adjustment or maintenance. Volunteers will get alerts immediately.

  • Volunteers can plan requests in a regular basis and reply to alerts when emergencies happened.
